Basic Processes

Introduction to Computers I (Basic Processes) – 4 sessions of 2.5 hours each – Cost: $40

Two sections:

1:00 – 3:30 April 1, 3, 8, 10 OR

9:30 – Noon April 2, 4, 9, 11

The basic objective of this course is to introduce you to the fascinating world of computers. In this course, you will be shown how to operate your computer — turning it on and off, navigating the computer screen and Start menu, using hardware and software and learning about the operating system. You will be shown how to use the mouse and keyboard. Hands on practice will be emphasized. If you are new to the computer, this course is a pre-requisite for ALL other courses.

Lesson 1 – Computer fundamentals

Introduction to the computer – what it is and what it does ● Description of computer hardware, software, and operating system ● How to turn the computer on and off ● How to connect to a printer ● Ways to connect to the Internet ● Tips on purchasing a computer

Lesson 2 – Using the mouse and keyboard

Learn how to use the mouse and keyboard ● Introduction to the Start menu ● Introduction to word processing

Lesson 3 – Navigating the computer and typing text

The Start menu ● Opening and closing a document ● Navigation keys and scroll bars ● Using menus, buttons, and radio buttons ● Type and edit text ● checking for viruses

Lesson 4 – Basic text formatting and the filing system

Use the toolbar to format characters ● Change font style, size and color ● Change document alignment ● Print and Print Preview commands ● Learn to install a program from its CD ● Storage Devices (Hard Drives, CD drives, and Flash Drives) explained ● Protecting your computer from Power Failures
